As Baby Boomers Age, More Services Needed to Care for Elderly

Naperville United Way

United Way researches the issues facing people in Naperville, researches the programs that best address those issues, and invests resources where they are needed most.

For instance, as the Baby Boomer generation reaches ?senior? status, more of us face the challenges that Amy True and her 78-year old mother Adeline face. Adeline suffers from dementia.

Tell us about your mother ? what is she like?

She is still a goof, still the life of the party. But she is on her way to losing all memory. It?s very strange to see that this person that you?ve looked up to change this way. I feel I?ve gotten my strength from her, but now she is totally different.

What help do you need taking care of her?

She lives with us. I bring her to Ecumenical Adult Day Care so that I can go to work, I can take my kids to school, and I know that she is safe. She has a routine, she gets a good meal, they do mental and physical exercise. She knows people here and she enjoys being here with the staff and with other elderly people who spend the day here. Being at home, I wouldn?t know if she would remember to eat or if she would even get out of bed.

How does Naperville United Way help?

Naperville United Way supports this program. My mom has taken care of me all my life. Now she needs to be taken care of, and this place helps me do that.

Naperville United Way supports a broad range of programs that improve lives.
